Honorary Consul for Quintana Roo and Yucatan: Expressions of Interest Sought

The Australian Embassy in Mexico invites expressions of interest for appointment as Honorary Consul of Australia for the States of Quintana Roo and Yucatán, Mexico.

The Australian Honorary Consul in Cancun will support the interests of Australia and its nationals, including:

 

Primary Functions

 

  • Providing consular assistance in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Mexico City (supervising mission).

  • Conducting passport interviews with Australians citizens on behalf of the supervising mission, from a suitable office location in Cancun

  • Maintaining contact with the resident Australian community.

 

Secondary Functions

 

The following secondary functions may be performed within the Honorary Consul’s jurisdiction on behalf of the supervising mission:

 

  • Fostering cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, in coordination with the Embassy.

  • Representing Australia in interactions with local authorities and the host government.

  • Assisting with Embassy visits or high-level visits.

  • Assisting in building public awareness of Australia in their jurisdiction by sharing information from the Smartraveller website.

  • Participating in ceremonial and public affairs activities as a representative of Australia, as requested or authorised by the supervising mission.

 

Eligibility.


Applicants must reside in Quintana Roo or Yucatán, possess an excellent professional reputation, have strong local networks, and demonstrate interest in international or consular affairs. Fluency in English and Spanish is required.

The initial appointment is generally for three years, including a one-year probationary period. The position is honorary and non-remunerated.

An annual honorarium will be provided.

Interested candidates should submit an expression of interest and curriculum vitae to [email protected] no later than close of business, Friday 27 February 2026.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires Honorary Consuls to obtain accreditation to perform work services for foreign entities and International Organizations. The accreditation will be requested by the Embassy once the successful candidate is identified.


This application is open to individuals of all nationalities, but applicants must already be authorised to work in Mexico.
