About the position
This is a locally engaged staff position at an overseas Australian Diplomatic Mission.
This position manages the owned and leased properties of the Australian Embassy in Mexico City with a strong focus on adherence to both Australian and Mexican Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) legislation. The position is also responsible for the maintenance of the Embassy’s ICT software/hardware and implementing security policies and security infrastructure projects. The position manages staff, including corporate officer and drivers and provides backup to other roles. Work outside of normal working hours may be required.
This position requires a probity check to be completed. Employment in the advertised position is dependent on the employee having or acquiring a valid DFAT probity check. Probity checks can take some time to process, and employment cannot be commenced until an appropriate check is confirmed. There is no guarantee that the successful candidate for the position will be successful in obtaining a probity check. The inability to obtain a probity check prevents that applicant from being employed and loss of a probity check at any time will lead to termination of employment.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires all local employees, Mexican nationals or foreigners to obtain accreditation in order to perform work services for foreign entities and International Organizations. The accreditation will be requested by the Embassy once the successful candidate is identified.

Vacancy - Australian Embassy - Professional Internship -
Political and Economic Intern

Ideal start date: early July.
DURATION:
The internship is for an initial period of four-months that may be extended to an additional six months. The position requires a maximum of 37.5 hours per week, with flexible scheduling available Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.
The Australian Embassy in Mexico is also accredited to all Central America (except Belize), the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
About the position
This position provides research assistance to the Political and Economic Section of the Australian Embassy in Mexico City under the guidance and instruction of senior staff.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with media monitoring and the production of regular media reports covering Mexico and other countries the Embassy is accredited to, with a focus on events impacting Australia’s interests.
- Conduct economic and sectoral research to support Austrade’s trade and investment objectives, including assisting with external enquiries related to trade and market access.
- Assist with other forms of research when required.
- Assist with events organised by the Embassy or official visits as required.
- Administrative support to political/economic team as required, including arranging meetings and visitor management.
- Shadowing diplomats to meetings, including to assist with notetaking.
- Provide other assistance to the Embassy’s Political and Economic Section as required.
Qualifications/Experience
- High order analytical skills
- High order writing skills (English)
- Fluency in both English and Spanish
- University degree or studies in International Relations, Political Science, Law, Economics, or related discipline, an advantage.
